“Poor little bitch girl”
2011.07.26.

jackie collinsWhen Jackie Collins' debut novel was published in 1968, the romance writer Barbara Cartland branded it "nasty, filthy and disgusting". Four decades and 26 bestsellers later, readers may wonder if, at 72, Collins still has what it takes to be nasty, filthy and disgusting. Turn to the first page of "Poor Little Bitch Girl" and you find that age has not mellowed her prose:

"Belle Svetlana surveyed her nude image in a full-length mirror, readying herself for a $30,000-an-hour sexual encounter with the 15-year-old son of an Arab oil tycoon."

The “poor little bitch girl” referred to in the title is Annabelle Maestro, the daughter of two Hollywood heavyweights. Determined to distinguish herself from her famous parents, Annabelle begins running a high end call girl service with her cocain addict boyfriend, Frankie, in New York City. Though Annabelle is the title character, the books real protagonist is Denver Jones, a talented, up-and-coming lawyer to the poor little bitch girlstars who lives in Los Angeles. Then there are Bobby Santangelo Stanislopolous and deceased Greek shipping billionaire, Dimitri Stanislopolous. Bobby owns Mood, the hottest club in New York. Back in the day he went to high school with Denver, Carolyn (personal assistant to a powerful and married Senator in Washington with whom she is having an affair) and Annabelle. And he is connected with all three of them. Frankie is his best friend.
When Annabelle’s mother is brutally murdered, Annabelle is forced to return to L.A. where she and Denver’s stories collide, along with those of a full cast of rich and beautiful characters and secrets from the past have a way of coming back to haunt everyone.
“Poor Little Bitch Girl” is an extremely timely story which is either a testament to Jackie Collins' ability to predict which celebrity scandals will hold the public’s attention, or her ability to turn a novel around before we forget about them. The intriguing “ripped from the headlines” feel of the book, combined with Collins' well-known status as a Hollywood insider, makes the reader wonder if the plot of this novel isn’t entirely fictional. Seeing the “next generation” of Collins' characters will be especially interesting for long time fans of the author’s work.  “Poor Little Bitch Girl” delivers the steamy drama Collins is known and loved for.
